STORYLINE:
Shiite insurgents fired mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenades at a police station housing U.S. troops; triggering firefights in Baghdad on Friday.
The fighting took place in the sprawling Sadr City neighbourhood, a stronghold of the radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
Later residents set up barricades of burning tires in the streets.
