President Yoon Suk Yeol has vetoed two bills spearheaded by the main opposition party to open special probes into high profile allegations, including his wife's suspected involvement in stock manipulation.
His Chief of Staff Lee Kwan-seop said Friday that the two special prosecution bills were unilaterally passed through "tyranny of the majority" without consulting the ruling party, while delaying the passage of urgent bills that matter for Korean citizens.
The opposition Democratic Party holds 1-hundred-68 seats in the 300-seat National Assembly.
Stating the bills were crafted to manipulate public sentiment before the April general election, Lee said the President has a duty to protect constitutional values in the electoral process.
One of the bills targets First Lady Kim Keon Hee who has been accused of involvement in manipulating the stock prices of a BMW car dealer in Korea.
An investigation under the previous government did not find any wrongdoing by Kim.
The other bill proposes a probe into six people suspected of taking kickbacks.in a land development scandal.
