The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Japan yesterday is nearing 50. Rescuers are racing against the clock and powerful aftershocks to find survivors amid the rubble. The 7.6-magnitude tremor rattled Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, causing widespread destruction. It also triggered tsunami waves more than a metre high. 57,000 residents spent the night at evacuation shelters in 950 locations.
