The prime minister kicked off the shake-up of his ministerial team by sacking Suella Braverman, but Cleverly said he would continue his predecessor's plan to reduce the number of small boats crossing the Channel, as task he said he was 'absolutely committed to'. Cleverly’s appointment as home secretary also comes 48 hours before a crunch supreme court decision on Wednesday when it will announce whether the government’s Rwanda deportation plan can happen.
