James Cleverly did not know how much the Rwanda legal battle had cost the country during a session in parliament on Monday 27 November.
While Mr Cleverly was being questioned on net migration levels, the new Home Secretary said he "didn't have the numbers to hand" but added he would "make sure the House will be updated" with the costs.
Rishi Sunak's flagship £140m plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is in tatters after the Supreme Court ruled it unlawful.
The UK’s highest court ruled in November that flights will not be able to go ahead in a blow to the prime minister’s key pledge to cut immigration to the UK.
Mr Sunak said “this was not the outcome we wanted” and said the government was now considering “next steps”.
