Mark Drakeford, the first minister of Wales has announced he is standing down as the country’s Labour leader – triggering a contest to elect his replacement.
Mr Drakeford who has been Welsh Labour leader since December 2018, said he hoped his successor could be in place before Easter 2024.
At a press conference in Cardiff on Wednesday (13 December), Mr Drakeford said he would remain as first minister until then “in the full sense of that job”.

The 69-year-old said he would continue to work “tirelessly” for a Labour government.
Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer praised Mr Drakeford for his leadership and called him a “true titan” of Welsh politics.
