Following the high-stakes meeting between United States President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the most obvious sign of warming ties between the world’s top two economies would be a dialing back of the military activity in the air and at sea near Taiwan, says Associate Professor Chong Ja Ian from the Department of Political Science at the National University of Singapore. A de-escalation in terms of the types of equipment being deployed by Beijing could also send a signal, he tells CNA’s Asia First.
