Amid fears that Israel's war in Gaza could spiral across the Middle East following twin explosions in Iran on Wednesday (Jan 3), former US ambassador to Yemen Gerald Feierstein says “this moment is very concerning”. Iranian leaders have vowed to punish those responsible for the blasts, which took at least 103 lives. No one has claimed immediate responsibility. However, the latest development, on top of the the assassination of a senior Hamas leader in Beirut, the Israel-Hamas war, Israel-Lebanon border clashes and the deployment of an Iranian warship to the Red Sea collectively have the “potential of being a triggering point for a new round of escalatory fighting”, the distinguished senior fellow for diplomatic engagement at Middle East Institute tells CNA’s Asia First.
