Palestinian protesters across the West Bank took the streets on Tuesday (January 2) night after hearing the news of senior Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri had been killed.
Arouri was hit by an Israeli drone strike on Beirut's southern suburbs of Dahiyeh, a stronghold of allied Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, three security sources told Reuters.
The protesters from Ramallah, Jenin, Hebron and Aroura, the hometown of Arouri, marched to honour him while chanting slogans such as “we will follow your footsteps.”
Arouri’s sister Um Kutayba said: “It is only natural for the occupation, but thank God, every child in Palestine is a leader, and there will be stronger leaders, and tougher, and they will lead along his footsteps,".
Israel had long accused Arouri of lethal attacks on its citizens, but a Hamas official said he was also "at the heart of negotiations" over the outcome of the Gaza war and the release of hostages conducted by Qatar and Egypt.
