STORYLINE:
Yemen's Houthi rebels held a military parade in Sanaa on Thursday to mark 9 years since their takeover of the city.
The display of hundreds of armed militants, several long-range missiles and drones in the capital of the country, took place the same week the Houthis traveled to Saudi Arabia for peace talks with members of the kingdom.
Yemen’s war began when Iran-backed Houthi rebels descended from their strongholds in northern Yemen and seized the capital of Sanaa in 2014, forcing the internationally recognized government to flee to the south then into exile in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia entered the war in 2015, heading a military collation with the United Arab Emirates and other Arab nations.
The coalition, which was supported by the United States, carried out a destructive bombardment campaign and backs government forces and militias in the south.
The conflict became a proxy war between regional foes Saudi Arabia and Iran.
But all sides appear to be looking for a solution after nine years of a war that killed more than 150,000 people, fragmented Yemen and driven the Arab world’s poorest country into collapse and near starvation in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
