The UN security council has passed a resolution in favour of increased aid for people in the Gaza Strip, after a week of delays and fraught negotiations.

A Russian amendment calling for a suspension of hostilities was vetoed by the US before a second resolution was adopted by the council with 13 votes in favour, no votes against and two abstentions. Russia and the US abstained and the motion passed.
