STORYLINE:
Dozens of Lebanese mothers and other protesters gathered on Friday near the French Embassy in Beirut, amid heavy security, to demand an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.
The protesters had tape over their mouths with reading "Gaza" and "Palestine" and placed mock coffins symbolizing civilian casualties in Gaza.
“We are here to denounce the massacres that are happening to our people and children in Gaza,” Dania Dandashli, said an organizer of the sit-in.
The protest then moved to the Lebanese National Museum where participants broadcasted sounds of the bombing in Gaza and the cries of Palestinian children, women, and men through loudspeakers.
"We are people who want justice and peace in the world. We do not accept our neighbours being killed in this manner while the world remains silent," said one of the protesters, Nisreen Shamseddine.
Pro-Palestinian protests and public demonstrations have taken place daily in Lebanon in support of the people of Gaza, who are facing daily Israeli bombing following the Oct. 7, attack by the militant Hamas group on southern Israel.
The United Nations estimates 1.9 million people have been displaced and new military evacuation orders are squeezing people into ever-smaller areas. Most lack food, water and medicine.
Around 1,200 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that triggered the war.
The Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said the death toll in the territory has surpassed 17,400, with more than 46,000 wounded.
