Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters shut down a major freeway in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday (December 13) as they called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Chants of 'Ceasefire Now' and 'If we don't get it, shut it down' were repeated as the protesters blocked traffic for about an hour.
The protesters descended on the freeway at around 9am local time, getting out of their cars and walking across the southbound lanes, according to media reports. They stood in the roadway and later sat down, forming a human chain.
Angry motorists scuffled with protesters in the road at times during the morning rush hour, and some motorcyclists managed to make their way through the human barricade, one taunting the protesters with engine revving and playing loud holiday music over their chants.
Some 75 people were detained, according to California Highway Patrol.
Israel's military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 18,500 Palestinians, displaced almost two million people and destroyed most of the coastal enclave.
Israel's Gaza assault came after Hamas' killing of about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in a surprise Oct. 7 attack.
