The U.S. House voted to formalize the Republican majority's impeachment inquiry into U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday, a move that could give them more legal firepower to investigate his family's business dealings.
The chamber voted 221 to 212 in a party-line vote to approve a resolution authorizing the probe. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said the vote showed that the Republican conference is united and emphasized that he expects people to now respond to their subpoenas.
The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed Hunter Biden to appear for a deposition Wednesday, but he refused to show up. Instead of complying with the subpoena, Hunter Biden held a media briefing on the opposite side of Capitol Hill.
Hunter Biden said he did not want to appear before the committee because the committee's chairman, Comer, would not allow the deposition to be public.
