Pope Francis has joined the United Nations in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. More than three quarters of countries in the 193-member general assembly demanding a halt to the violence, days after the United States vetoed a truce in the conflict.
The assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of a ceasefire, with 153 countries in favour, 10 against and 23 abstentions. Arabic and Islamic nations had led the call for the resolution, which denounced the “catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the suffering of the Palestinian civilian population”.
