At an impressive height of 6,734 meters above sea level, a new record was set for the highest a car has ever traveled. This feat was accomplished on December 2 by Romain Dumas, a skilled racing driver. The location for this record-breaking event was the top of the Ojos del Salado volcano's western ridge, situated in Chile. Dumas achieved this in a Porsche 911 that had undergone extensive modifications, notably running on eFuels. His efforts were backed by a diverse international team, with members hailing from Chile, France, Germany, the United States, Canada, and Switzerland.
For this remarkable endeavor, two specially modified Porsche 911 cars, affectionately named 'Doris' and 'Edith', were employed. The car that actually broke the record was the 'Edith' model, which stood out for being lighter and more agile. This specific car was a product of collaboration between RD Limited and Porsche. Dumas piloted 'Edith', showcasing its superior off-road capabilities. This model was based on the latest 911 Carrera 4S. Despite the significant modifications, its engine—a 443 horsepower, 3.0 liter six-cylinder boxer—remained unchanged. It was coupled with the original seven-speed manual transmission. Another notable feature was the use of standard Mobil 1 lubricants, which ensured the car's performance remained unaffected even in the harsh, cold environment. The 911 model proved to be an ideal choice for this challenge due to its robust yet lightweight chassis, ample power, and exceptional performance at high altitudes.
