India’s 28 states have a great deal of autonomy to set their own laws and policies and also to implement national rules in critical areas such as foreign investment, education, energy, and health. Successful innovative state-level policies may also be taken up as a model by the Center to be scaled up nationwide. For this reason, Indian state legislative elections are tremendously important in determining the country’s political and economic trajectory as well as its interactions with regional and global partners. State-level election results may also serve as a harbinger for upcoming national races. On December 3, election results will be announced for Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Telangana. Polls indicated most of these races to be very close. Join our experts as they discuss what these results mean for India’s future development trajectory, national body politic, next year's general elections, and relations with the United States and other key partners.
