The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) has voted in favour of the National Health Insurance Bill.
Eight of the nine provinces have approved the bill, with only the Western Cape voting against it. The NHI system is expected to be implemented in stages once President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved it.
However, healthcare organisations, businesses and the opposition have all strongly opposed it.
They've urged the president not to sign the Bill into law, and to refer it back to Parliament for reconsideration.
The government says NHI is designed to use pooled funds to provide access to quality, affordable personal health services for all South Africans based on their health needs, irrespective of socio-economic status.
However, it requires raising an additional R200 billion in taxes, and the business says SA does not have the resources. Dr Katlego Mothudi, Board of Healthcare Funders of SA Managing Director joins us now.
