STORYLINE

Palestinian schoolchildren scuffled with Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint in the West Bank city of Hebron on Tuesday morning before soldiers fired tear gas and dispersed the crowd, witnesses said.

The students, upset that Israeli soldiers searched bags and made students lift their shirts before passing through the checkpoint on their way to school, refused to cooperate.

The group of about 300 elementary school children, swarmed around the checkpoint, shouting, "We want freedom to study," kicking the plastic barrier separating them from Israeli soldiers, said the witnesses, including an AP reporter.

They said troops raised their rifles to ward off the throng of students. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

Soldiers scuffled with a few female students who confronted them, but the group scattered when soldiers fired tear gas into the crowd and arrested two students, the witnesses said.

The rest of the students went home as part of a strike protesting the security checks.

The Israeli military had no comment on the incident.

Palestinian Education Minister Mohammed Qawasmeh said the problem wasn't with the students but with the army and the checkpoints.

Qawasmeh said students regularly arrived late for classes and were forced to stand outside in poor weather while waiting for about 800 students to clear the checkpoint's gates every morning.
