Rescuers attempting to reach the 41 construction workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel in the Indian Himalayas resorted to manual tools and hand tunneling on Monday amid fears of impending rain.

The rescue operation has been plagued by damage to their machinery, and rescue workers have resorted to drilling by hand, after clearing away the broken equipment.

The trapped workers, from some of India's poorest states, have been stuck in the 4.5 km tunnel in Uttarakhand state since it collapsed on Nov. 12.
