Shocking eyewitness videos captured the scene in Dublin city centre last night, as rioting broke out in the wake of a serious stabbing incident.
Violent mobs roamed the Irish capital, setting fire to vehicles and clashing with police.
The unrest was sparked by an incident of horrific violence earlier in the day, which took place in Parnell Square East.
Three children and a woman were injured in a suspected knife attack outside a school. Police detained a man in his 50s, who was also injured.
No motive has yet been determined and terrorism has not been ruled out, police say.
In response, a heated demonstration began near the crime scene on Thursday evening, with protesters attempting to break through a police cordon.
The garda commissioner, Drew Harris, said a “complete lunatic faction driven by far-right ideology” was behind the disorder.
A police car and double-decker bus were destroyed during rioting, a hotel was badly damaged and a Foot Locker store looted.
Locals have been urged to stay away from the city centre this morning and work from home.
