Does the Quran prophesy the end of the state of Israel? There's been a lot of social media commentary on this subject, and Dr. Shabir Ally weighs in. He says that chapter 17 in the Quran is thought to be a commentary on current affairs. He says this modern interpretation comes from a place of desperation and a desire to find hope in the Quran. However, he argues that the verses in question were futuristic from the time God told the Israelites it would happen, but not futuristic in our time. Dr. Shabir doesn't like this modern interpretation for another reason: it likens contemporary Muslims to those who originally destroyed the temple in 586 BC. He says we can draw an indirect lesson from this verse: all human beings need to be aware that if they misuse the power God gives them, God can diminish them in this life.
