"The case is brought in terms of the Genocide Convention. South Africa is arguing that, Israel has violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention in that there are genocidal acts that are being committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip. And for South Africa to be able to prove that there are, in fact, genocidal acts that are being committed, they have to show, three things. One is that they have to show that they are, in fact, acts of genocide that are being committed. And that includes, you know, killing members of a protected group or causing serious bodily harm, and mental harm to members of a protected group or inflicting conditions of life, on the protected group, with the purpose of destroying that group."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Thamsanqa Malusi, legal analyst:
"There needs to be measures in place, interim measures pending the determination of the full case. Those measures being an immediate ceasefire by Israel on the Gaza Strip, pending the full determination of that case. Because what South Africa is arguing is that if the interim measures are not taken there would be irreparable harm that would be caused on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. Because, as you know, court cases can take long. So if we were to wait for a full determination of the full case, it might take a year, if not twoll and by that time, there would have been serious destruction that had been caused in Gaza and against the people of Palestine."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Thamsanqa Malusi, legal analyst:
"This conflict is happening against the backdrop of an Israel state that many international human rights organization called an apartheid state. You know, you have Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch that have called Israel an apartheid state, which is a crime under international law. And I think that resonates strongly with South Africa, given its past, its history, its past of apartheid as well, which the existing ANC (African National Congress) government, you know, fought against. So there may well be other motivation."

STORYLINE:
South Africa's long-held support for the Palestinian people can be traced back to the time of Nelson Mandela and Yasser Arafat.
The two leaders believed that the struggle for freedom by Blacks in apartheid South Africa and Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank were the same.
That solidarity has survived for more than 30 years.
Israel stringently denies the genocide allegations.
