300,000 to 700,000 visitors were expected in Ayodha in the first week following the historic event, which would see Modi pray for the first time before an idol of Lord Ram, one of Hinduism's most revered deities.
Pilgrims from across India and even abroad have already arrived in the holy town. Speaking to Reuters on Wednesday (January 17), Narayan Das Mandal said he had travelled from the city of Janakpur in Nepal, which is believed by devotees to be the hometown of Lord Ram's wife Sita."We feel like we have reached Heaven," a visibly elated Mandal said.Authorities are leaving no stones unturned to ensure the smooth passage of an event which traces its history to a bloody past.Ayodhya made international headlines in 1992 when a Hindu mob razed Babri mosque — where the Ram Mandir will stand — saying it had been built on the site believed to be Lord Ram's birthplace.
