Last fall, Dolly Parton returned with what turned out to be one of the biggest and most exciting albums of her career, Rockstar. The set saw her covering some of the biggest hits in rock music history and even creating some rollicking tunes of her own in an effort to change things up and try a new genre. Months after that set arrived and became a massive win for the superstar, she’s back with even more rock tunes. On Friday (January 19), Parton surprised her legion of fans with new music as part of her birthday celebration. The singer-songwriter didn’t drop a new song or two, but enough material to fill another album, which she could have done. Parton didn’t release a surprise album, though. Instead, the country favorite added nine new tunes to the Rockstar tracklist, unleashing an exciting deluxe edition of the project. Now, the already lengthy effort–which originally contained 30 songs– features 39 and runs nearly three hours long. The chart-topper revealed the good news on X (formerly Twitter) with a note that reads, “It’s my Birthday so I’m going to give you a present! I’m releasing four never-released songs for my birthday, to go with the Rockstar album, and a few others that you may have heard before that were not on the album. I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you all have a happy birthday for me! LOL. ”The newly-released roundup includes rocking versions of her own tracks “Mama Never Said, ” “Stay Out of My Bedroom, ” and the aptly titled “Rockin’ It. ” In keeping with the rest of Rockstar, Parton also covered several additional rock smashes, putting her own spin on the familiar favorites. She included her take on Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot, ” Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise, ” Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water, ” Billy Joel’s “The Entertainer, ” and the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). ”As if that wasn’t enough music for her fans to enjoy, Parton gave them one more take of one of her most beloved tracks, “Jolene. ” The signature tune is now a duet–again, that is–between the original musician and Italian rock band Måneskin. Rockstar arrived in November 2023 after months of promotion from Parton. She doled out several singles, a few of which arrived on the Billboard charts, even bringing her to the rock lists for the first time. The album peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, becoming her highest-ranking solo release ever.
