Rishi Sunak has urged the House of Lords to “do the right thing” and pass his flagship Rwanda Bill as quickly as possible after it cleared the House of Commons last night.
The Prime Minister told a press conference in Downing Street: “There is now only one question: Will the opposition in the appointed House of Lords try and frustrate the will of the people as expressed by the elected House or will they get on board and do the right thing?”.
Mr Sunak said he wanted the first migrant deportation flight to Rwanda to take off “as soon as practically possible” but he failed to give a cast iron guarantee that flights will be underway by the next general election.
He said the Government had demonstrated the “urgency with which we are attacking this problem” and “it is now up to the House of Lords”.
MPs voted in favour of the Bill by 320 to 276 as a major Tory rebellion failed to materialise. The Bill will now be sent to the Lords for further scrutiny. Opposition peers are expected to try to make changes to the legislation which could delay its passage.
