The Rwanda Bill has cleared the Commons in a victory for Rishi Sunak as a much-vaunted Tory rebellion fizzled out.

The Bill was supported by 320 MPs, a majority of 44, in a major boost to Mr Sunak’s hopes of starting deportation flights to the African nation by spring.

Despite 64 Conservative MPs backing amendments aimed at toughening up the legislation at second reading, only 11 voted against the Bill on Wednesday night.

These included Suella Braverman, the former home secretary, and Robert Jenrick, who quit the government over illegal migration at the end of last year. A further 18 Tory MPs had no votes recorded.
