Iran launched airstrikes in the middle of the night on Pakistan territory, reportedly aimed at a Sunni militant group, Jaish al-Adl. The attack comes a day after Iran's missiles attacked targets in Iraq and Syria, in a wave of conflict unfolding across the Middle East and beyond.
Pakistan has hit back by striking inside Iran at seven locations according to its government spokesperson.
Indian Intelligence Officers Believe that the Jaish-al-Adl was the same terror group that abducted Kulbhushan Jadav from Iran and handed him over to Pakistan's ISI.
Iran fired missiles at Pakistan's Balochistan province hours after Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar met the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry said two children were killed and three others were injured in what it called an “illegal” airstrike, and summoned Tehran’s senior diplomat in Islamabad to protest against the “unprovoked violation of its airspace”.
In Iran, the strikes were reported but references to the attack in Iranian media quickly disappeared. Iran and Pakistan have long had a tense relationship, in large part because of the activities of Balochi separatists and other militant groups in the border area.
