Police Report: On August 18, 2023, I, Trooper Ghermaine Yepez, ID (1426), received a call from the Lake Worth Regional Communications Center (LWRCC) regarding an armed carjacker being pursued by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department on State Road-91 (Florida Turnpike), approaching mile marker 93.
Trooper Elvis Nolasco, ID (901), Trooper Lucas Tavares, ID (1064), and I intercepted the vehicle as it passed the Lake Worth Service Plaza at mile marker 94. The description of the vehicle being pursued was provided by LWRCC as an older model white Kia 4-door sedan.
I observed the vehicle, a white Kia Optima 4-door sedan, passing the Service Plaza while driving on the east paved shoulder at high speeds. I advised Trooper Nolasco to move ahead of me, as he was driving a marked Dodge Charger Sedan patrol vehicle, to become vehicle number 1, while I became vehicle number 2, and Trooper Tavares became vehicle number 3. Trooper Tavares took over communication as we continued pursuing the reckless vehicle.
The vehicle continued northbound on State Road-91, weaving in and out of traffic, speeding, and driving erratically on the shoulders, demonstrating a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others traveling on the Florida Turnpike in Palm Beach County. Trooper Nolasco attempted a PIT maneuver around the 97-mile marker. The driver of the suspect vehicle abruptly slammed on the brakes as Trooper Nolasco closed the distance to perform a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique). Trooper Nolasco's vehicle became disabled. I then assumed the lead of the pursuit, with Trooper Tavares becoming number 2 and taking over communications.
I pursued the vehicle up to the 106-mile marker as it continued to drive recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic, speeding, and using the shoulders. I soon noticed a decrease in my vehicle's drivability, and it became unstable. It was at that point that I realized I had a right rear flat tire, rendering my vehicle out of service. I pulled over to the grassy shoulder and concluded my involvement in the pursuit.
The suspect, identified as Lias McArthur Corker Jr., a career offender with a revoked Florida License, was later apprehended and subsequently charged with:
1. Reckless Driving Causing Damage to Property
2. Flee/Elude Police - Aggravated Fleeing with Injury or Damage
3. Driving While License Permanently Revoked
This event occurred in Palm Beach County.
