Ecuador has been in crisis since prominent gang leader Adolfo Macias escaped prison on January 7, 2024, and President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day state of emergency. For decades, the Andean nation has been known as an “island of peace”, sandwiched between two of the world’s largest cocaine-producing nations, Peru and Colombia, and garnering the attention of foreign investors like China. But after Colombia cracked down on the narco-trafficking group Farc, disbanded in June 2017, violence has leaked into Ecuador, with the latest flare-up worrying Chinese companies like Huawei.
