King Frederik X has acceded to the Danish throne after his mother, Queen Margrethe II, formally signed her abdication at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.
His wife, Australian-born Mary, who had been the country’s crown princess for the past 20 years, has now become Queen Mary.
