1949 was an important historical demarcation point. After the Battle of Xu Bang, the Nationalist government was retreating on the mainland. On May 5, 1949, on the eve of the Communist Army's invasion of Shanghai, Chiang Ching-Kuo ordered a ship from the China Merchants Bureau for retreating. On the evening of May 6, accompanied by Chiang Ching-kuo, Chiang Kai-shek and his personal guard Yu Jishi boarded the Jiang Jing ferry and waited until early the next morning to depart for the Zhoushan Islands. May 25, Shanghai fell. But another vessel of China Merchants, The Hanmin ferry, along with several navy ships, had sent the stocked gold to Taiwan in batches a few days ago. Chiang Kai-shek flew from Chengdu to Taiwan on December 10, and therefore drew a dividing line in the history of the Republic of China.
About 1.2 million people retreated from China to Taiwan. Many of whom, including the military and civilians, had left their homes and separated from their relatives all of a sudden. They had to buried all their memories and affection of their hometowns and loved ones deep in their hearts. One century later, the gloomy memory of this particular period of time still sunk everyone’s hearts. Part 1 covers: War against Japanese and The three major battles between KMT and CCP.
