President Biden will appear at a campaign event in Charleston, South Carolina, Monday afternoon, his fourth visit as president to a state that helped him seal the Democratic nomination in 2020.
Biden is speaking at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the oldest Black congregations in the U.S., with a history that has paralleled that of Black Americans. In 2015, it was the site of one of the deadliest hate crimes in recent years when a white supremacist murdered nine people at a prayer meeting in the church basement.
Biden on Friday spoke at another historic location, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, the site of a Revolutionary War encampment, to underline what his campaign characterizes as former President Trump’s threat to American democracy.
The president is slated to speak at 12:30 p.m. EST.
