Taiwan’s ruling party has held on to the presidency, with Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party set to lead the self-governed democracy of over 20 million people for the next four years.

Beijing has repeatedly denounced Ching-te as a dangerous separatist and claims it could retake its former territory by force if necessary.
Nivrita Ganguly reports on the election and what it could mean for Taiwan-China relations.
