On January 1, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred off the coast of Ishikawa Prefecture.
The epicenter was located at a depth of about 10 km, 42 km from the village of Anamizu.
The powerful earthquake was followed by a series of strong aftershocks.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama.
The first waves of the tsunami, about 1 meter high, hit part of the western coast.
