Grindavík was evacuated early on 11 November after magma shifting under the earth’s crust caused hundreds of earthquakes, likely precursors to an eruption. The recent seismic activity has caused roads and buildings to crack and left the interior of people's homes covered in debris. Some of the more than 3,000 residents evacuated from the town have been allowed to return briefly to their homes to collect pets and essential belongings.
