Amid fears that the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict will ignite a broader scale of violence in the Middle East, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured Arab leaders on Sunday that the U.S. is against Israeli ministers and lawmakers calling for the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
"Palestinian civilians must be able to return home as soon as conditions allow. They cannot, they must not, be pressed to leave Gaza," Blinken said during a press briefing in Qatar.
As of Saturday, more than 22,720 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed since the conflict began on Oct. 7 — following Hamas’s unprecedented attack in southern Israel that resulted in the death of over 1,200 people and the capture of 240 hostages.
Despite pressure to end the violence in Gaza from the international community, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is sticking with his initial vow to destroy the entire Hamas organization.
“The war must not be stopped until we achieve all of its goals — the elimination of Hamas, the return all of our hostages and ensuring that Gaza no longer pose a threat to Israel," Netanyahu said on Sunday at a weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.
