The Burlington Public Library is unveiling a new discovery space created to inspire the kids who visit ahead of its official opening next week.
Tammy Csajaghy, the library’s programming and partnerships manager, says everything about the area is made to inspire kids who visit.
“Today we are doing a soft launch of our discovery space which is an area in the library geared to children 6-12 years old. It will primarily focus on self exploration and the doors will be an open space… we have bins of all types of resources we’re hoping for and we know kids will come and enjoy.”
The idea behind the “discovery space” came from customer feedback asking for more STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, arts and math, programs and activities for kids.
Those programs are in particularly high demand, says the library.
The colourful space provides children the opportunity to build, tinker and create by using bins of supplies, toys and technology.
“It’s meant to be a creative space that’s really open and unstructured because we know that’s a really important way for kids to learn.” says the library CEO Lita Barrie.
Isabel Blackbird McMurich, a mother of two young girls, says she’s excited for the fun and educational environment the space will provide.
“Some of the things I’ve seen the girls using is a robot which we wouldn’t have the chance to do at home and just seeing all the different bins,” said McMurich.
The space is set to open on Monday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
