Please join the CSIS China Power Project on Thursday, October 5 from 9:30 am-5:30 pm EDT for our eighth annual conference featuring keynote remarks and leading experts debating core issues underpinning China’s power. Please save the date and join us in-person or virtually for a full day of debates and keynote remarks by Dr. Ely Ratner, assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs at the United States Department of Defense.
The conference will debate the following topics:
The United States and China are locked in a new Cold War;
The United States and China are making progress in creating a “floor” in U.S.-China relations to manage tensions and crises;
China is more likely to blockade Taiwan than invade the island in the next ten years;
China’s accelerated expansion of its nuclear arsenal represents a shift in China’s nuclear strategy and doctrine.
Joining us to unpack these issues: Dr. Michael Beckley, director of the Asia Program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, associate professor of political science at Tufts University, and nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; Mr. Dan Blumenthal, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; Dr. Fiona Cunningham, assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania; Ms. Bonnie Glaser, managing director of the Indo-Pacific Program at the German Marshall Fund; Mr. Lonnie Henley, senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute; Dr. Phillip Saunders, director of the Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs at the National Defense University; Mr. Chad Sbragia, research staff member at the Institute for Defense Analyses and former deputy assistant secretary of defense for China at the Department of Defense; Mr. Rick Waters, managing director of Eurasia Group's China practice; Dr. Arne Westad, professor at the Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale University; and Dr. Tong Zhao, senior fellow at the Nuclear Policy Program and Carnegie China at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Dr. Bonny Lin, director of the China Power Project and senior fellow for Asian Security at CSIS, will moderate the discussion.
