It's not negotiable, it's an immediate necessity, and in the longer term, it's also a condition for the effectiveness of our fight against violence. Today, the situation is serious and worsening daily. In the short term, it's up to us to protect civilians. This requires a rapid humanitarian pause, and we need to work towards a ceasefire. This must become possible."

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron has opened a conference on aid to Gaza in Paris on Thursday with an appeal for an humanitarian pause in hostilities.
Macron reiterated calls for a humanitarian pause in Israel’s operations against Hamas, stressing protecting civilians was “non-negotiable.”
"It's up to us to protect civilians. This requires a rapid humanitarian pause, and we need to work towards a ceasefire. This must become possible," said the French president.
France wants Thursday's aid conference to address the besieged Palestinian enclave’s growing needs including food, water, health supplies, electricity and fuel.
Over 50 nations are attending.
France says Israeli authorities weren't participating in the conference.
