STORYLINE:
Surfers in a southern California county were seen riding powerful waves on Saturday, despite an evacuation warning for some residents living along the coast amid a high surf driven by Pacific storms.
Ventura county officials warned residents about high waters expected near a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway in California, and the fire department told people to avoid coastal areas.
Conditions were much worse in Ventura on Friday but the city's mayor, Joe Schroeder, touted the work of local officials to build barriers between the water and beachfront homes, close off streets and warn residents to avoid beaches.
Fire department spokesperson Andy VanSciver said the evacuation warning was just that — a warning — and that there were no reports of injuries Saturday.
