Shiite Muslims, traditionally the least represented religious community in Lebanon, were first able to express themselves in the moderate and generally secular Amal movement. After the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979 and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, some Lebanese Shiite clerics founded Hezbollah with the aim of withdrawing Israel from Lebanon and establishing an Islamic Republic there.
Let's turn the calendar to 2006. The Hezbollah Organization, operating in Lebanon, triggered a state of war between the two sides by killing 8 Israeli soldiers and kidnapping 2 Israeli soldiers on July 12, 2006. An intense Katyusha missile attack was carried out against Israel from Lebanese territory.
The previous month, Hezbollah's involvement in the conflict significantly increased the cost of Israel's ground offensive on Gaza. The Tel Aviv government did not want to deal with the Hezbollah threat from the north at a time when it was focusing on Gaza. Therefore, it had to deploy troops and resources to not only protect its southern borders but also ensure the security of the entire northern region.
This war brought Hezbollah back to the forefront as a major resistance movement against the Israeli occupation. During the Syrian civil war, forces that viewed Hezbollah with hostility within Lebanon and abroad perceived them as Shiite militias that prevented attacks against Sunnis and any attempt to overthrow the government in Damascus.
Its intervention in the current war has restored Hezbollah's popularity, particularly to prevent an Israeli land attack on Gaza. Aiming to change the rules of engagement with Israel, Hezbollah targeted and neutralized military infrastructure such as watchtowers, eavesdropping and jamming devices, which allowed it to monitor all movements along the Lebanese border by targeting Israel's advanced surveillance systems.
