“Our homes were demolished, and my son was martyred. We fled and the bombing took place all night. There is no good shelter. Every time we go to any area, they hit us there."
Thousands of Palestinian families have sought refuge in Gaza's few remaining, already overcrowded camps, as they flee Israel's intensifying ground war.
Israeli military strikes have been concentrated in the territory's central and southern regions and resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians.
The latest people to be displaced fled from several built-up refugee camps in central Gaza that have been targeted in the latest phase of Israel's ground assault.
Due to overcrowded UN shelters, many newly displaced individuals in Gaza have resorted to setting up tents on sidewalks during the cold winter, particularly around al-Aqsa Martyrs, the main hospital in the town, which is perceived as a safer location from Israeli strikes.
However, the reality in Gaza is that no place is safe.
Israeli military actions are forcing a large part of the population to congregate in Deir al-Balah, Rafah, and a small rural area near the southern coast. These areas are still subjected to Israeli strikes that often destroy homes with residents inside, raising fears among many of a potential ground assault in these regions as well.
