"At 6:30, I was heading to the port with three people in the car. We arrived here, but the water surrounded us, the car stopped, and our clothes got soaked. The car is still submerged in water. I thank Beirut Municipality for not cleaning the roads or opening the drains. Who will compensate for this?"

“The river here is wide at first, then it narrows towards the end. The amount of water that fell, the river couldn't channel it to the sea, so the water overflowed from the sides and flooded the adjacent road. This road was flooded due to the river's high-water level."

“The fire department, civil defense, and Beirut municipality teams worked on evacuating people stranded in their cars at night. There were about 40 cars with people inside, submerged in water. We managed to evacuate them safely, thank God, and fortunately, there were no significant health issues reported."

STORYLINE:
Several roads were closed in Beirut on Saturday after heavy rainfall in the Lebanese capital which caused the city's river to burst its banks.
Civil defense teams were seen assisting some motorists who were stranded in the floodwater.
Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said emergency teams evacuated people from around 40 cars stuck in flooded streets near the river.
“We managed to evacuate them safely, thank God, and fortunately, there were no significant health issues reported," Abboud said.
The state-run National News Agency reported that caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati followed up with the relevant ministries and their departments on the situation.
