7. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Olena Koroliova, Kyiv resident:
"Like any other Ukrainian, I would like him gone, completely. I can’t wish death to a person... right? But I have nothing to wish for that kind of person. It would be a best solution for Ukraine, but it would not save us much, because people of Russia are supporting him."

STORYLINE:
Kyiv residents reacted on Friday to the news of Vladimir Putin announcing his candidacy in the Russian presidential election next March that he is all but certain to win.

Denis Budiuk, Kyiv resident and student, said it's "obvious" that Putin will be re-elected.

"I don’t think that there is someone who is ready to take his place," he added.

Another resident Larysa Kacheniuk echoed this sentiment saying "their election is only a formality".

Putin still commands wide support after nearly a quarter-century in power, despite starting an immensely costly military operation in Ukraine that has taken thousands of his countrymen’s lives, provoked repeated attacks inside Russia — including one on the Kremlin itself.
