In a groundbreaking move, Afghanistan signed an oil extraction contract with the Chinese company CAPEIC on January 5, 2023. The contract covers a vast area of 4,500 square kilometers, including Qashqari, Zamarudsazi, and Bazar areas in Sar-e-Pol, Jawzjan, and Faryab provinces. This strategic partnership is expected to yield approximately 87 million barrels of oil from the five discovered areas. The Qashqari oil and gas project, a key component of the contract, aims to boost daily production from 200 tons to 1,000 tons with further exploration. The agreement involves a significant initial investment of $150 million, eventually reaching a total investment of $540 million.
