The Kaaba in Mecca has been described as a holy place. According to the 1st-century Roman historian Diodrus Sallus, there is an ancient association between Lord Shiva and the Kaaba. [The site where Mecca is today was formerly a temple of Makkeshwar Mahadev. At this place there was a huge Shivling in the form of black stone which is present in a fragmented state.
The word "Makkah" in the original English transliteration of the Arabic and in English dictionaries is heavily used in the English language and literature and by international organizations in academic writing. The oldest name of the city of Mecca was Bakkah (or Baka, Bakah, Bekah etc.). The term Bakqah is widely considered a synonym for Mecca. The early name is said to be more specifically for the valley in which it is located, while Muslim scholars generally tend to use it to refer to the sacred area of the city that immediately surrounds and includes the Kaaba.
