With this video we begin a 6 episode series of our tour of Switzerland with SOTC. We took a 7 day packaged tour of Switzerland organized by SOTC in the month of May 2019, before Covid-19 pandemic, it was called Best of Switzerland. We will tell you about our experiences, such as, the places we visited, the hotels we stayed in, the food we ate and everything which made our trip enjoyable and satisfying. This series would give you a fair idea of what to expect in such a package tour.
During this trip we stayed for 2 nights each at 3 hotels at 3 different places in Switzerland. We were a group of 48 tourists from various parts of India plus the Tour Manager and the driver of the coach; this coach or bus was with us for our entire trip. This was a huge advantage over touring Switzerland on your own. After completing the tour we flew back to Mumbai from Milan in Italy.
On the morning of May 9, 2019 we boarded an Oman Air flight from Mumbai, it stopped over at Muscat where we changed planes. At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport someone from SOTC came to see us off, this is the normal practice; he offered to help us if we required any help. We landed at Zurich late in the evening and went straight for dinner at a restaurant called Flavour of India, the food was really very good. We stayed for two nights at a hotel called Harry’s Home at Zurich, which had opened about a week ago; so we were lucky to stay at this brand new hotel. The breakfast next morning was superb, far exceeding our expectations.
On the second day (the first day being the day we landed), that is May 10, 2019 we visited Mount Titlis and Lucerne. The weather was bad in the morning, so when we reached the top of Mount Titlis at 10000 feet altitude we were a bit disappointed not being able to see the scenery due to heavy mist. The snow on the bridge had turned into ice and was risky to walk on, it was drizzling and there was some snowfall and visibility was very poor. To go to Mount Titlis one has to take a cable car from Engelberg, and there was an Indian restaurant. There were huge crowds of tourists at Engelberg and Titlis, mostly Indians and Koreans.
At Lucerne the two main attractions were The Lion Monument and Kapellbrücke or Chapel Bridge. Lucerne is located on Lake Lucerne and is known for its well preserved medieval architecture. The distance between Zurich and Lucerne is 52 kms, regular train services exist between the two cities but there is no bus service.
The Lion Monument is a rock relief in memory of the Swiss Gaurds who were massacred in the year 1792 while serving the French king Louis XVI during the French Revolution.
Kapellbrücke or Chapel Bridge is a wooden bridge, it was constructed to connect the Aldstadt or old town. This bridge caught fire in the year 1993 and caused significant damage.
Lucerne has a number of noteworthy museums. The Swiss Museum of Transport being one of them. The city also has a number of old churches. There are lots of chocolate shops and one can take a boat ride on Lake Lucerne. The city has a lot to offer, so to explore one has to stay which we could not.
