The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said during remarks in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday that the people of Gaza were “trapped” in an enclave that “has now shrunk by half.”
“It has been almost six weeks of hell for the people of Gaza… Six weeks far too long for the Israeli hostages and their families,” Lazzarini said. “It has also been six weeks of total disregard for international humanitarian law. I have to say the scale of destruction and loss is just staggering.”
“There is nowhere safe in Gaza. Whether in the north, in the south, in the middle – there is none. People have been asked to go from the north to the south, but in reality, one-third of the people killed have been killed in the south,” Lazzarini added.
According to Gaza residents on Thursday, Israeli forces dropped leaflets warning Palestinians to flee parts of southern Gaza, signaling a possible expansion of their offensive to areas where hundreds of thousands of people who heeded earlier evacuation orders are crowded into UN-run shelters and family homes.
