Work on the L-29 project began in the first half of 1955. The prototype XL-29 in Letňany first flew on April 5, 1959. Two years later, the machine participated in the comparative tests in Monin near Moscow and won the competition for standard jet aircraft countries Warsaw Pact. A total of 3665 pieces were produced.
